Awesome. So much action in one night. I thought Esslemont's first foray into the Malazan universe was a great time. It took me about halfway into the book to get the real Malazan world feel, but it did happen and I was just as confused as I usually am. Not to say that being confusing is the way one feels at home in this world, it's just an added bonus. :) ...more

So much joy to return to the Malazan world! Nothing earth shattering here, and nowhere the level of Erikson, but still well done. I've heard he gets better, very much looking forward for the ride. Entertaining. It belongs in the Malazan world, uses the same characters, and is thematically aligned, but the voice is definitely different as is the prose. Enjoyed it and will pick up the next.

Fits in the first book in the Malazan Tales of the Fallen series, I believe after the prologue and before chapter 1.

After reading a lot of less than stellar reviews of this I wasn't expecting it to be that good, but was pleasantly surprised. A solid entry in the Malazan saga, filling in some of the back story hinted at in the Erikson novels. ...more
