The year is 2044 and the real world has become ugly so most people spend their time plugging into the internet. Wade Watts spends most of his time in Oasis, a virtual utopia, where you can be anyone and live on any type of world you want. There is a contest based on different video games and movies from the 1980s. Wade and his friends have studied the games, movies and the life of the programmer of this contest to attempt to win this crystal egg. Unfortunately there is an organization that cheat ...more

I'm. Obsessed.
I'm evangelizing about this book. I'm dreaming about it. I'm going off on Wikipedia tangents because of it. Cline deserves goblets of the finest gummy bears fed to him by the most beautiful of Tatooine princesses.

The best compliment I can give this book is that it deserves to be produced by the very makers that it was a love-letter to. Too bad, it's partially impossible. ...more

DISCLAIMER: Yes, I grew up in the eighties. Yes, I'm a rabid video gamer. You have been warned.

OMG, I love this book. Wade's voice and character: awesome. The description of the games and gamer culture: awesome. The premise of the book: take a guess (yep, awesome). Kid you not, I had the same reaction to the end of this book as I do during the multi-stage final battles of the games I play ("Aaaaaaah, will you just die already! This is so awesome! HAHAHAHAHAHA!") I will have this book on my shelf

I hate to love books recommended via celebrities, but this one . . yes, yes it's all true.

80's trivia, gamers, esoteric geek knowledge, plus name dropping of all my favorite modern geeks. and I don't want to spoil anything, so I will just say that page 201 actually made me scream with joy and laughter.
plus, the book was exciting, interesting, and fast. a perfect book to start off the new years reading.

This is a fun, fast-paced, clever read. I recommend it to anyone that considers themselves a nerd, gamer, or lover of the '80s. The future that Cline creates is so believable it's almost frightening. The world he creates in OASIS is fascinating. I caught myself wondering what kind of planet I would create. I can't wait to see the movie! ...more

I hate this book so much. I hate it so much, that I actually looped around into liking it a little just so I could go on hating it.

Really, it should be 1.5 stars, half a star for being occasionally, begrudgingly compelling.

I have a lot of words to say about this, but I'll wait til I get on a computer.
