In the beginning, it reminded me a lot of The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making, but once the border into the Free State was crossed, the story shifted away from that.

A sorta-Victorian fantasy world where Morrigan is from a rich but mean spirited family. Rescued by a red-haired showboat she finds a real home as he sponsors her for his society's elite training school. She makes friends and figures her way through the challenges as a deeper menace creeps closer, until all the clues come together and she sees why her life has been both cursed and blessed.
