It wasn't so surprising when Sherlock makes the nab, but when the story suddenly transforms into a completely different storyline. I was reading by audio and I honestly wondered for a moment if I'd somehow got the wrong disc, for a different book, or something. I actually became momentarily frustrated: while not an uninteresting story, it wasn't the story I wanted, I wanted deduction, not cowboys and Mormons. A Study in Scarlet is not the best Sherlock Holmes book, nor is it my favorite, but it does bear the distinction of being the first Sherlock Holmes book ever and the first Sherlock Holmes book I read. Unlike most books I read, I viscerally associate it with the first time I read it: I borrowed it from my Fifth Grade teacher's library while I was going through a mystery phase, and it sparked a life-long love of all things Sherlock Holmes. I loved the first part of this book the most. The second half started slow and I felt that there was almost too much detail in the writing that it took away from the plot. I thought the second half of the book was a totally unrelated story at first, after nearing the end of the book the relevance to the story is revealed. I have been watching the BBC Sherlock episodes and actually enjoyed that they had a different spin to the books especially since the tv show is set in modern day age and Doyle' ...more
