Synopsis
First published in 1959, Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House has been hailed as a perfect work of unnerving terror. OKAY it's maybe not a 5-star book but I liked it more than I expected, and it has what is potentially my favorite opening paragraph to any book ever. Plus, the show rocks. ...more

I don't want to say much about the plot, as I'd rather not delve into spoiler territory..

This book really surprised me! I read it because I was taking a reading challenge to read some "modern classics" from the 50's-90's. Well written and an interesting premise. It's certainly worth a read!

I think because this is a classic I expected more. I had always thought of it as horror and it is definitely more American Gothic. That being said the ending left my chest tight and Jackson really does have a way with words.

What is it that plagues the walls of Hill House? Is it ghosts, poltergeists, or just pure evil lurking beneath its walls. The characters are all interesting and their immediate banter is both endearing and amusing. As Hill House spreads its grips to the people within the
