The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi is so much fun to listen to via audiobook since the story is structured as if Amina is sharing her story to a scholar. The story is interspersed with scholar notes, which is a fun touch. There are two things I especially like about the story: 1) Amina is a fantastic protagonist. It was a bit of a slog until the last 100 pages, when it really picked up -- ever since Amina landed on the shores of the magical land ruled by the feathered 'court'. Descriptions of the otherwordly beings and natural elements on that island were a delight to read, stretching my imagination farther than it usually goes. It was quite a classic hero arc of Amina failing initially to defeat the foe, then becoming more powerful and returning to finish the job, full of glory. I look forward to the se ...more
