Most of the group thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, only one considering it to be cliched and poorly written. We liked the fact that it wasn't the usual wartime romance or action adventure, dealing instead with the darker side of the Home Front, with people on the make, struggling with rationing and trying desperately to make ends meet. Quirky, funny and desperately sad. Noel, aged 10, is an evacuee from London and ends up living with Vera, her lazy son, dependent mother and her dodgy scams. Vera tries to make money by encouraging people to donate to various charities which, of course are destined for Vera's pocket. Noel helps plan a strategy.
