Okay, I get it. This was the "set up" book. Isn't that what the middle book of a trilogy often becomes? Lots of plot points are set up, new characters are introduced, and then you are left at a cliffhanger.
I can't say that I loved this book...no, not like I loved The Golden Compass ...I still love Lyra, and I've come to love Will as well. But as far as the plot is concerned? I'm just not sure. This book was so different than the first. The Golden Compass presented this beautifully woven, ...more

Not quite as fantastical as the Golden Compass, due to most of the novel setting place in our world. Reality hits home however, and the book won me over with the friendship between the two protagonists Lyra and Will, and the development of the aeronaut Lee Scoresby as well as the chapters concerning the witches.

I enjoyed this book, but not as much as The Golden Compass. Most likely due to the fact that it is the middle book in the trilogy, there is a lot of set up and little pay off. It ends with a bit of a cliff hanger which is annoying since Adam is still reading book three and it will be years until he is finished.

Wow, the story is going more complicated and I'm sure it have a good timing on every sub-story it has. Well, I must say, his dark materials trilogy is one of my favourites series.
