4.25 stars I really liked this story but sometimes found the back & forth jumps in time hard to keep up with (although that's probably due to numerous interruptions from family and pets =D). I'd like to read it again & hopefully it will be easier to keep all the pieces straight next time.

Let me start out by saying that this is an excellent book, I have never read a book quite like ATLWCS. It is deep, sad, harrowing at times, poignant. Keeping in mind that it took place just right before, and during WWII for the majority of the book, it is not a "pretty" book. It deals with some of the things we really don't like thinking about, but in spite of that, the imagery is so great. Mr. Doerr did a wonderful job of describing so many things, one that is really sticking out in my mind too

4.5 Stars, rounded up. Wonderful writing and a memorable story of 2 children, one blind French girl and one German orphaned boy, coming of age during WW2. The story was chilling and beautiful. Somewhere in the middle I grew depressed and was trying to plow through. Very sad and while not too graphic, I cannot imagine the horrors during this time; it’s just beyond my comprehension.
