Really enjoyed this fantastic novel, set during and after WWII. I love this era and there have been some really good books of late, set during this time period. This one follows the lives of three very different women and their experiences.... Herta, a German doctor assigned to a female-only concentration camp; Kasia, a prisoner at the camp; and Caroline, an American woman from New York, involved in charity work for the war effort. This book kept my interest from page one. Definitely recommend!

Inspired by the life of a real World War II heroine, this debut novel reveals a story of love, redemption, and secrets that were hidden for decades.
New York socialite Caroline Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the horizon. But Caroline’s world is forever changed when Hitler’s army invades Poland in September 1939—and then sets its sights on France.

I had several times throughout the book where I had to stop reading it for a while, because it was so emotional for me, and that is partly why it took so long for me to finish reading it. My heart went out to all the women who suffered such inhumane treatment,

This book was so well written and had me in tears more than once.

Overall, I enjoyed this story. I listened to the audiobook on Overdrive. I liked how the three different perspectives of Caroline, Herta and Kasia were all read by different narrators. I think the biggest negative of this story was the length. It was just too long and by the end (which was just too drawn out) I was bored. I think this is a fine historical fiction story set in the 1940s-1950s but it didn’t blow me away. I would have preferred reading a nonfiction book about the real events discus
