If you are looking for a middle grade historical fiction with a dash of magical realism that is equal parts heart-warming and heart-breaking, then I would definitely recommend Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster. This book is classified as Middle Grade Fantasy but in my opinion this book does not fit easily into any classification. This book is part fantasy, part historical fiction, part folklore and reaches across all generations with the timeless message of "You save yourself by saving others".
