Yet again, Samantha gives me life while taking my breath away. Not in, like, enlightened gasps--sorry if that's what you thought I meant. More like public guffaws that either made passerby run away from the crazed lady reading a bright yellow book in public with unabashed joy, or slow their pace and lean in to read the title in my chortle-shaking hands.

Anything that makes me laugh out loud more than once is a five-star read. Full disclosure: I did not enjoy Meaty: Essays that much, so I was apprehensive about this book. But oh god, I needn't have worried. Irby's grown as a writer, and she's SO. DAMN. FUNNY. (Honestly, I get the giggles every time I think about the part of the book where she talks about Nutrisystem. Look I'll be honest with you--I don't read a lot of essay collections. It's not really my bag.

But Samantha has this way of writing that sounds exactly like she speaks. When I'm reading these I'm transported and in my head I can HEAR her narrating this to me. I always feel like she's telling me these stories over drinks and making me choke with laughter on my Big Star tostadas.

She's a real one.

Irby is bawdy, clever, cool, hysterically funny and sassy, yet these essays maintain an undertone of sadness. She writes about her various partners, her struggles with her weight, and the hardships she experienced growing up. Not to be missed- read in a place where you are able to laugh at loud (so maybe not during church...)
