This is the last book written by Professor Roy Porter formerly of the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine. He died a week after completing it. It is a lively account of the philosophy of medicine during the Age of Reason/Enlightenment and contains some rather gruesome anecdotes about great doctors as well as an insight into their thinking on the subject of human suffering.
