There used to be two sorts of history publication: highly academic (for which read "virtualy unreadable") and popular.
Now there seems to be a third type that fits neatly in between. Very readable literature reviews that allow the more intetested non-academic reader to gain insights that, even, thirty years ago would have been buried in copious footnotes (often in Latin).
Mr Singleton's work on Montrose fits the bill nicely.
