The Peregrine is strange book. The study of a particular bird, and the record of an obsession, it's almost a long-form poem with a metre dictated by the rhythm of the subject itself: the daily life and habits of the peregrine falcon. It's beautifully written, and allows us to see through both Baker's eyes and the bird's eyes simultaneously, giving the whole narrative a mystical, other-worldly feel. This is not a dry, scientific volume of ornithology, but a weird and vibrant account of the beauty
