such a lovely, gentle fantasy! i read this slowly, usually just a few chapters before bed, and it was a very comforting experience.
it's an interesting retelling because the classic cinderella is also endlessly obedient, though she doesn't have a curse on her like ella. she's obedient because of feminine socialization and cultural expectations. this book is wonderful for naming inescapable obedience a curse, as it is.

This was an adorable retelling of Cinderella! I loved it! Ella is such a spunky sweetheart it is so easy to like her. I wish Mandy had at least tried to protect her a bit better though. Many characters in this are so self-centered but it had a rign of truth to real life. And there are also good people but often playing smaller roles. So it all works out. Hattie seems to be the worst but her mother I like less as she is the one who raised Hattie and Olive, turning them into the "ladies" they are.

This book. It's my all-time favorite book ever. It was my favorite book when I was young and honestly, it still is my favorite book. I've read it 4 o 5 times and I will be re-reading it for the first time in 14 years soon!
