After many years, I reread In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens: Womanist Prose which contains essays, memiors, and articles. In one of the memiors, Alice Walker tells of how the main characters of The Color Purple accompanied her everywhere for a season. Went on picnics with her. Told her stories all the time. And demanded that Walker share their stories. Their stories are told in the novel.

I can see why this a classic but it wasn't very enjoyable to me. It was harsh and upsetting and sometimes it was boring. Celie is put through so much, more than any one person should have to handle, but she perseveres through it all and finds herself along the way. She becomes an independent, strong, courageous woman through all of the tribulations she meets. The language was really hard to read, as I am such a grammar nerd and it was hard to focus on the story when the errors are so glaring eve
