the most interesting (albeit frustrating) part of this book for me is poirot's reliance on outdated cultural conceptions in his investigation. our suspects include an italian, some english folks, a hungarian couple, a russian princess, a german maid, a few americans, etc. there is much discussion about who has the ethnic temperament to have committed the crime. was it a woman's crime of passion or a man's calculated crime? a brutal "latin" stabbing or a methodical "anglo" killing?
