A wonderful story!
Well written storylines with alternating point of views for each character. First and foremost, there's Chance.
Chance is a Pitt Bull who was rescued from dog fighting by his Human, Alan, before the actual timeline if this novel. I always enjoy reading (or in this case, listening to) a 'humanized' version of doggie thoughts. I sense many of the same vibes off my own dogs and wonder if they find my human traits bazzar.

Alan is reeling from the recent death of his wife and was burying himself in his work as a coping mechanism. The only happiness he finds is from time spent with his dog, Chance. Little did he know a quick decision during a heavy storm to stay at a run down No Tell Motel would change their lives.

Cody is your typical tween. She is angry her mom uprooted her and moved them to a small town because she has a dream of owning her own motel. Being in a new school, and no friends, Cody is having a hard time fitting in and, being "different", she is bullied by the kids who grew up together and don't like "outsiders". Cody also has a huge secret about the night of her father's murder that she is forced to keep from everyone, especially her mother. She befriends another outcast, Black Molly, who really doesn't have Cody's best interests in mind. During an evening of drinking pilfered beer and smoking pot Molly and Cody exchange secrets and all too quickly Molly is using this knowledge to blackmail Cody.
Cody's mother is written well. I raised 2 daughters and found many of my own thoughts and experiences echoed within her pages. The dilemma all parents face about how strict should they be over how much space should your child have to grow.
Mingo and Lucky, aka Dawg (another Pitt Bull), are found in need of rescue one evening when Chance hears Lucky's cries and runs off to find the dog that needs help. Cody and Alan run after Chance who found Mingo almost dead of an overdose and Dawg chained up nearby.

This is a story about second chances. All the main characters (human and canine) are trying to put something behind them and start anew.

My only complaint about the book is the ending. It felt hurried; unfinished. Too many questions were left unanswered. Conflict resolution in only a few paragraphs. My co-worker and I both felt cheated by the ending. This is why I can only give this book 3 1/2 stars. Since Goodreads only allows full stars I upgraded to 4 because 95% of the book was great. ...more
