First book of 2019 and it was so-so. Better than my first book of 2018 though! (Lincoln in the Bardo)

I'm so conflicted with this book. I wanted to love it, it's exactly the kind of book I'd get lost in and re-read many times. It wants to be Holly Black. But it doesn't quite capture fairy tales like Holly Black does. I do LOVE that Alice is a bookworm and many favorite books are mentioned! Two stars means "It was okay."
Three stars means "I liked it."
I'm somewhere in the middle...

I find it hard to describe my thoughts on this book...

I liked the story, but the narrative was wonky.
The way things are described are weird and I just didn't understand some of it.
Two examples:
A voice like the bones of leaves...
A color the same as a soda I've never heard of...
There were other references that I assume were from books or movies I've never read or watched. These kinds of things just take a ...more
