Where to start?! Firstly, I don't think I have a good enough grasp of the English language to properly describe this story. But I'll try.
Elizabeth Knox has a sublime way of storytelling. Her descriptive passages are beautiful and compelling. The characters bold and real. The sort of characters where every reader has the ability to side with a different character - which would make it an interesting and argumentative choice for a book club no doubt!

Do not read on an empty stomach. Or a full stomach. In fact, try not to think about your stomach at all, or possibly, keep a handy bucket nearby. Or a teddy bear.
Knox's writing is as incandescent as ever and her mastery of horror - bodily, intellectual, cultural - beautifully rendered in WAKE.

Wake mixes the very familiar (I know the area she's writing about and kept visualising another town on the fictional town which was extra disturbing) along with horror, SF and the supernatural. Quite a mix for a small South island community. The Kakapo were a pleasant addition giving us Bella a DOC conservationist, seemingly more interested in helping the birds survive and thrive than in her human companions. Of the characters, Theresa the community policewoman stood out along with Sam. Sam with

Oddly paced, with the opening bizzare behavior racing and introducing too many characters too quickly.
