Wow, I read this as a read aloud to my sevenyear old. It took us 6 weeks to finish. It was slow to start and quite verbose (as was the style at the time) but it sure picked up steam in the last 100 or so pages.
I would recommend this to anyone who hasn't read it yet but with a suggestion, have a sea life guide beside you so that you can look up the creatures that they see as they are usually only named by their latin names (making very difficult read aloud). It is also useful having a globe with ...more

It took a little time to adjust to the language and pace of this novel, but it is so worth it. I confess, too, that this beautifully illustrated version helped. I enjoyed the references to other literature and to science, and I loved the philosophy nuggets strewn throughout. Yes, this is a product of time and place. It still inspires the imagination. I tried reading this to the boys but it's really pretty boring. We got about halfway through. They were actually very patient but still weren't enjoying it much. There's a lot of lists of animals and plants without much description. There are some action scenes but not much. On the whole quite disappointing.
