Chadwick's first novel, and Book One in the Ravenstow Trilogy. Guyan, a Marcher Lord marries Judith of Ravenstow at the order of King William Rufus. They meet on their wedding day, and Guyan finds himself with a not fully matured 16 year old wife. Judith is skittish around her new husband as her now dead father was extremely abusive to both her and her mother. Not everyone is happy with the union, as some would prefer Judith married elsewhere and Guyan must guard his back against attempts on his

Although I've read most of Elizabeth Chadwick's books, The Wild Hunt, her first novel, was one that I had missed and I enjoyed reading it. As it was her first book I came to it with a lower expectation than I have of her more recent work but I was impressed - although this edition is an improved version of the original.

I couldn’t resist putting on hold my other read for this story. This is a library loan that Graham snapped up and I didn’t want to lose the opportunity…
The Wild Hunt was Chadwick’s debut novel and won a Betty Trask Award (as well as a literary agent and publisher!). I’d like to share part of Chadwick’s Author’s Note because it’s great inspiration for all aspiring writers…

Elizabeth Chadwick is one of the authors who never fails to suck me into her novels and make me sad when they're over. It's a rare treat for me when I do find such an author.
This one was a wonderful tale with a little action, a little romance, a little politics, all just enough to make me want to build a time machine so I can go back to the Middle Ages and see it for myself.

What a wonderful read! Set in the turn of the 12c, in the Welsh border area, it is a novel centred on the fictional character of Guyon FitzMiles, and his wife Judith. True historical characters include Robert de Belleme (Earl of Shewsbery), and his off-sider Walter de Lacey, who both show the darker characters of time, and also appearances from William Rufus and Henry I.[return]The relationship of Guy and Judith has a feel very much like that of Llewellyn and Joanna in Sharon Penmans Here Be Dra

Loved it! The setting is the wild and stormy and dangerous Welsh Marches around 1100. The period atmosphere is wonderful! Really felt like I was there. And the characters of Guyon and Judith are convincing and excellently drawn. It's an engaging and page turning glimpse into this era and a romantic love story too with bodice ripping of a tasteful nature! Going to read all of Elizabeth Chadwick's novels now!

The flavor of this was more Romance than Historical I'm sure the right reader will do nothing but love it. For me I think I'll try more of Elizabeth Chadwick's more recent and less Romance-y work.
