A book that starts out sad and ends up heart warming. Set in the Depression, this book features a young black boy who is an orphan. He searches for a home, more importantly a dad, but finds something else.

This is a dramatic and engaging tale that is both heartbreaking and hopeful. The narrative draws the reader in and I appreciate that it teaches a bit about life in the 1930s without being overly didactic.
We all enjoyed reading this book (separately) and it made for a great discussion at our girls' local library book club.

Bud, Not Buddy kept me eager to see what was behind the next door. Buds adventure from each new stop on his journey to finding where he belonged was definitely interesting. I absolutely loved the story for its ability to pull me into it and keep me there. Also, could be a lesson here on proper grammer and/or manners.

It kind of bothered me to let the kids hear about how a little boy had rules to make a better liar out of himself. Maybe I'm just too uptight, but it really bothered me how this character tried to say he was honest because he didn't steal, but he was working on being a better liar.
