Oh, Chuck... Wouldn't it be nice if someone would translate this book into English? Although all the words in this edition can be found in an English dictionary, the syntax appears to be Korean. (I'm making this part up. I have no idea what Korean syntax is like.) Take, for instance: "Then now, make small parade to arrive sleeping chamber..." This means, of course: "Walk on over to the bedroom..." Or: "Over course conflict, males boasting superior masculature inflict injure upon males typical of ...more

I've long avoided reading anything by Chuck Palahniuk because I didn't want to be one of "those" people. We all have those people in our lives - the people who think Fight Club is akin to the Bible.

In any case, this was the only palatable looking book in the Hudson News in the San Francisco airport Delta terminal. It was either this or The Last Song or something by Glenn Beck. Very creative story telling by Palahniuk in this one. A group of terrorists infiltrate America disguised as exchange students living with host families. Every sentence is written in broken English from the perspective of Pygmy, one of the operatives. It makes for difficult slow reading but eventually you get into the hang of it. Incredibly witty, laugh out loud at times and of course sometimes completely disgusting. Fun!

Totally bizarre, totally unexpected, and therefore, totally Palahniuk.

The style of writing does make this book rough going, and then the content makes it rough going, but I found, as with many of his books, that once I got started I didn't want to stop.
