This is the first book in the Smile series by Raina Telgemeier. It is an autobiographical story about growing up in the eighties. I could relate to her experiences and I really love the candid way she told her story.

I love how she discovers that she is happier when she is surrounded by friends who encourage her and support her and when she follows her passions. I also love that her crush on Sean was unrequited. It's a common experience and one that I could empathize with.

I read the two stories

This is a pretty quick read as it is in graphic novel format. This is for the mother/daughter book club that I am in. My daughter hasn't started this one yet, but I am anxious for her to start. This is a true story about the author's expierence with what she calls "dental drama". The book spans from her 12th birthday into her high school years. Interjections from the adult Raina help provide perspective for kids wondering if things will ever get better. She g ...more

Fun, fast, and a good recommend to teen girls. Not very deep and the art didn't rock my world, but I think it is a great read for its audience. ...more

Cute story.

Such a wonderful book! This graphic novel tells the story of Raina and her unfortunate accident when she was barely 12. She endured over 4 years of dental surgery and appointments. Plus, she was going through middle school, discovering herself and becoming a teenager entering high school. Raina became one strong girl and I so admire her perseverance through all the changes.
