I really like The Series of Unfortunate Events, so I wanted to love this. I did really like it. I love the snarky comments and observations written simply enough for middle schoolers to understand. I also like his efforts to explain, immediately following introduction of challenging vocab, its meaning. But , I couldn't love it because the mystery was just a bit too muddled. A typical Snicket offering, blending author and protagonist in a silly, safe mystery with his telltale writing style. Still, as clever as it was I ended the book with a resounding "so what?"...nothing particularly compelling about the mystery. I'd rather re-read the Series of Unfortunate Events books.
