This is the third book in the Jedi Academy series by Jeffrey Brown. I first discovered this series after reading Darth Vader and Son and Vader's Little Princess.
As in the first two books, I liked the different characters and the sincere way in which Roan expresses his varying emotions in his journal. The story has a Diary of a Wimpy Kid-meets-Star Wars-kind of feel, with fun graphic-novel illustrations interspersed throughout the narrative.
