This book is funny, odd and yet insightful at the same time; probing the deepest and casual thoughts throughout the first half of a man's day.
It's urban and professional setting is but one part of his rambling thoughts. Most of it is a tribute to his youth in the 60s and the changing times as well as observations of human behavior.
He uses far too many 50 cent words, where a more simple and understandable word would have sufficed, but overall it's a great book...one that I find hard to believe ...more

I've always wanted to read The Mezzanine, after getting my first glimpse of Nicholson Baker from Vox (which has quite a different premise, but a shared amazing attention to detail). The Mezzanine was written in the mid-80s, and is a curious, deliberate examination of middle class America and office work life. In focusing on the details (tying shoes, office conversation, bathrooms, sleeping, milk cartons, etc), he actually does manage to say some profound things about the life as he (and we) knew

I read this book concurrently with Nicholson Baker's present new release House of Holes, they couldn't be more opposite! The mezzanine is an ultra painstaking literal look at the real world around you. Much of the topics were things all of us experience but prior to this may not have given great thought to. I enjoy his excellent writing. I gave it to Jack to read and he is loving it too!
