The next book in my effort to read through Dame Agatha's collected works, I found this book to be a bit contrived, with too many coincidences and a bit too predictable. Perhaps I need to take a break from her books? In any case, it was still a decent quick read and an interesting tale. I liked the story and loved the characters, but the book was not my favorite. I should have read this one before reading The Seven Dials Mystery, but I read them close enough together to get some continuity from t ...more

Given that I've read every Agatha Christie about nineteen times, I have a bit of trouble remembering which one is which. It's not helped that they all have been released under different names in the UK and US and in different editions. So when I wanted a Christie on vacation in a used bookstore, I made my choice from what was available with a somewhat spotty memory. This is the first of the series ostensibly centered around the character of Superintendant Battle of Scotland Yard. The Secret of Chimneys was written in 1925. Adventure loving Anthony Cade leaves his job as a travel guide to carry some important papers to London. These are the memoirs of a Count who had ...more

The Secret of Chimneys - Christie
Audio performance by Hugh Fraser
3 stars

This is one of Christie’s earlier mysteries. The plot is concerned with the politics of a fantastically fictional Slavic country. There’s an overabundance of complicated red herrings, and a charming young amatuer detective to act as a foil to Inspector Battle. The whole thing caused me to roll my eyes more than once. Sometimes I like to roll my eyes. It was mildly entertaining.

This one paled in comparison to the other Christie's I've recently read, but it involves aliases and royalty, so of course it's still fun! I am a bit biased toward her female protagonists (with the exception of Poirot), so maybe that's why I wasn't into this one as much. ...more

3.5. Too many suspects, but I liked many of the characters.

This and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd are my favorite Christie mysteries, and I have read quite a ton of them. :)
