Great book, an excellent insight into the life of a stray dog. I actually read the sequel, Everything for a Dog, first, which made for an interesting read. I like the structure of this story better, but I like the actual story of that one more. I do wish there had been a bit more of a crossover in terms of how both ended, but it wasn't particularly necessary to either story. It just would have made for a nice wrap-up.

It was a very touching story, but a little bit too touching. I tried reading it to my kids, but then every night we'd all end up crying and chasing our dogs around the house in order to hug them. It traumatized the kids and probably traumatized our dogs a little too. But it's well written. I recommend it; just make sure to have a steady supply of Kleenex on hand.

I read this story after reading the "sequel," Everything for a Dog. I didn't even know that there was another book until the end of that book. I was eager to read "Squirrel's" tale and while I liked Everything for a Dog, I really liked this story. It flows more smoothly, without switching between characters or moving forward and backward in time like the other story does.
