Nicholas is one of Dickens’ earlier novels, published serially about 10 years before David Copperfield. I really liked the movie, and I loved the book. This novel presents a bleaker tale, although it turns out alright in the end.
Nicholas Nickleby is the oldest/only son, and his father has just died. They have no income, no way to earn a living. Nicholas, his sister and his mother travel to London to ask help from the deceased fathers brother. Big mistake. Nicholas is sent to a boys "school" run by a Mr. Squeers. Dickens has the ability to write characters that you love to hate and characters that you root for. I really enjoyed this novel for the writing, the story, and the characters. I wasn't familiar with the story before I had read it so was surprised by each of the developments in the plot. Great story of clinging to hope, staying true to yourself and kindness, above all things, will help you in the end.
