She exasperates her mother, fights with her sister and delights her father….. until she is diagnosed with leprosy. In the late 19th century, leprosy is a death sentence. With no known cure or adequate treatment, the only preventative measure available is a drastic form of quarantine. Rachel is separated from her family and removed to the leper colony on Molokai.

What an amazing book. This story of a girl seperated from her family at the age of six and exiled to suffer from leprosy alone should have been tragic, but it wasn't. It was a story about there being beauty in everything, and your family are those who surround and love you, whether or not they are related.

Brilliant novel about the beauty and tragedy of Mokokai-- the island where many Hawaiians were exiled when diagnosed with Hansen's disease (otherwise known as leprosy). It's an excellent choice for book clubs.
