I was very curious about this book. I knew it wasn't going to be anything like Harry Potter and wanted to see what J.K. could do with a modern day village life setting. She definitely captured how messed up people can be and all the quirks of small village life. There are a lot of characters, none of them very likable, and she goes into so much detail with the subplots. I knew this wasn't going to be Harry Potter, but I still wanted it to be infused with adventure, characters you love, and perhaps even a hint of magic. Because that's what I wanted, I think I was especially disappointed in this book, though it wouldn't have been a favorite regardless of who wrote it.

I read another review that said it's like reading an entire book about the Dursleys and that is spot-on. Lots of unpleasant people doing unpleasant things.

J.K Rowling should stick with Young Adult books. It was very hard for me to connect with the character's in this book. I would like to give this book a rating of 1 and half stars.
