A serious case of "It's not you it's me". I would've loved this book a few years back, or maybe if I was in a different mood. I enjoyed how it wasn't romance based, and how Yelena had to fight for herself inside of sitting around and waiting for someone to save her. I also really liked Valek's character, who is an assassin that masters in poison. I mean, how cool is that?

This really caught me by surprise. I love these older YA fantasies, they're so unique and original. And this was far ahead of it's time, with an age gap romance that actually didn't show any signs until far into the story, as well as a trans character (although they're not out).
It didn't carry the whole 'chosen one' vibe, nor the super easy 'training montage' trope, nor the 'instantly knows how to use power' trope. There were a lot of different dynamics in this one, and I can't wait to read the ...more
