In Story Engineering, Larry Brooks advocates outlining, and I can’t say enough good things about that subject. Brooks believes that there are certain aspects of writing that we need to master before we can plan and execute a compelling story. The six ‘core competencies’ embraced in Story Engineering are character, concept, scene execution, structure, theme and writing voice.

Enjoyed his previous online-only books from his web-site. He's a good presented (saw him at LDStoryMaker 2011). Looking forward to this book.

Really good book. It's fits will with my "outlining" approach to storytelling. He does address discovery writing as well.
I now have a great arsenal of information to attack and improve my current work in progress. I'll probably read again afterwards to remind me of the core competencies that I'll need to work on next.
