An absolutely fascinating Africanfuturist thriller, in which aliens that look and sound a lot like Yoruba oreishas invade modern Lagos. I loved the lushness of Okorafor's imagination--the sea monsters angry at humanity for wrecking the oceans, the marine witches and warlocks that save the day. There is a fascinating LGBTQ subtext in the novel that suggests that it is queerness that is deeply African, rather than homo- and transphobia, which are presented as colonial impositions.
