What can I say about this beautiful story of Hemingway & Hadley in their early days in Paris when they were "very poor and very happy"? I am always amazed by the disconnect between his incredible prose, the depth of his insight and his truely sh*t 'real' personality. Genius has its dark side and he certainly did. This is my favorite go-to book when I need a flashback to Paris. The descriptions are incredible and can provide an interesting walking tour of the city. Knowing that the relationships and encounters with other famous writers are not written exactly objectionally does not take away from the stories.

I just went to Paris for the first time, re-read this book and did a stomp around the Latin Quarter and even checked into Shakespeare & Company. The book means so much more now that I've actually been there, especially having a walk down Gertrude Stein's quiet street (47 rue de Fleurus). Paris definitely lives up to the hype, although living on $5 a day (as Hemingway remarks in the book) is way off these days. I'm going to take a moment to be impressed with myself for reading an Ernest Hemingway book. I've never really enjoyed his writing. After reading The Paris Wife, though, I've developed a fascination with him, and especially Hadley. I think this was more readable than other Hemingway works because it was so broken up into little vignettes. Altogether, a good read. He captured a lot of little things really well. I found the stories about Scott Fitzgerald especially interesting.
