This joins the ever-growing collection of books inspired by D&D like role playing games. This one comes even closer as the setup is that the players fall into a “real” game environment. As such there is a lot of fourth-wall breaking as the story shifts between the players and the characters in the adventure.

Not five stars because there is a lot of “lad” joking around and commentary, along with the adventure. Even though this book (and the rest of the series) are short, there were also many plac

My first foray into the RPG genre. By which I don't mean books set in an RPG world (like Forgotten Realms) but stories where gaming is an explicit part of the narrative. In Critical Failures, a group of gamers piss off their game master and find themselves transported into the game. Kind of like an RPG Jumanji. It's quick read, and funny. I listened to the audio book and the narrator was really good. The book itself was a little rough to start with but it go better it went on. The writing is fairly crude and plays off a lot of the negative stereotypes of RPG players and games. I haven't decided if I'm going to try the next book yet. ...more

I liked it...I feel that the glut of cursing took away from what - at times was laugh out loud story.

This is the third in real life D&D players transferred to a fantasy game world series that I've read recently. My favorite series is Drew Hayes's "NPCs", this one would come in 2nd not as good a story as NPCs but it was funnier and still had a decent story and a great trick to keep (view spoiler). Rosenberg's "Guardians of the Flame" comes in last the story wasn't as good as NPCs and neither was the humor. Now onto book 2 Critical Failures ...more

Good Read.

A LitRPG story. The players are a-holes to the guest GM/DM and gets transferred to another world. Some character growth with a small amount of leveling with display of their abilities. May read the next book.
