This joins the ever-growing collection of books inspired by D&D like role playing games. This one comes even closer as the setup is that the players fall into a “real” game environment. As such there is a lot of fourth-wall breaking as the story shifts between the players and the characters in the adventure.

My first foray into the RPG genre. By which I don't mean books set in an RPG world (like Forgotten Realms) but stories where gaming is an explicit part of the narrative. In Critical Failures, a group of gamers piss off their game master and find themselves transported into the game. Kind of like an RPG Jumanji. It's quick read, and funny. I liked it enough to read more in the series. (I initially picked it up because I started listening to the Authors & Dragons podcast, which is hella funny.)

I listened to the audio book and the narrator was really good. The book itself was a little rough to start with but it go better it went on. The writing is fairly crude and plays off a lot of the negative stereotypes of RPG players and games. I haven't decided if I'm going to try the next book yet.

This is the third in real life D&D players transferred to a fantasy game world series that I've read recently. My favorite series is Drew Hayes's "NPCs", this one would come in 2nd not as good a story as NPCs but it was funnier and still had a decent story and a great trick to keep (view spoiler) . Rosenberg's "Guardians of the Flame" comes in last the story wasn't as good as NPCs and neither was the humor. Now onto book 2 Critical Failures
