Mini-Review:
4 Stars for Narration by Matthew Broadhead
3.5 Stars for Game Concepts
2.5 Stars for Uneven Story Progression
3.5 Stars for Chess
The title & idea behind Chess is cool. The LitRPG story has potential. It has an interesting setting and just enough to give you a vague outline of what's going on. Light game mechanics and cool spins on how to work with a interactive game world that is driven by the choices that all players make within the game. Really good read
I really like the idea of you not trying to get in power but putting an NPC in power. So this is a different take on most lit RPGs. But it telegraph's the ending really hard so I can't really see myself doing more than three stars ...more

The first half of the book was a solid 5 stars. The second half of the book was 3-4 stars. It’s a great story overall and I really liked the world building in the first half of the book. Great balance of explaining game mechanics with keeping the story going. I would have liked to see the author spend more time on the game side of things.
The second half of the book was heavier on the Real Life side of the fence, and I just didn’t connect as much with that. The story also got a bit heavier than ...more

This was pretty average.
As far as VR stories goes this is nothing new, a lot of drama outside the game and a little too much of it. There isn’t a ton of stats and the most we see o my it is through crafted items and quest lines that are easily solved. Chess never seems to run into any problems that aren’t easily solved by his genius. The main reason I would read the next book is due to the cliffhanger we all saw coming.

Told in an interesting way. More like a strategy guide for crafting in a new world then anything. The ending was a bit abrupt, but other than that I really enjoyed watching the main character use creating to their advantage.
