What started out as a very entertaining, solid 4-star book that made me chuckle while listening on my way to work, became in the final chapters a 5-star book that made me cry into my coffee on my couch on a Sunday morning.

I really enjoyed and was pleasantly surprised by this book. Vivian, the main character, tells her life story from her perspective as an older woman. Vivian comes from a conservative family who is comfortable financially. When Vivian has issues with staying in college, her parents send her to live with Aunt Peg. This book reminded me of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo due to some similarities, mostly the fact that both are centered around an old American woman looking back on her long and eventful life. But there are a few key areas where they differ.

Both books use showbiz as a backdrop, but Evelyn Hugo is a movie star in old Hollywood while City of Girls' Vivian Morris doesn't go into acting herself, instead becoming a costume designer at a rundown New York City theater in the 1940s. For most of the
