This book is my favorite of all time. I first read it as a teen, and then re-read in early 2006, and I enjoyed it even more the second time around. The mother is one of the most evil characters in fiction and what she does to her two sons is devastating. Steinbeck is my favorite author, and this novel is a literary classic that provides a most enjoyable read.

Sort of a hybrid between autobiography and fiction, but more fiction. I know there is a Cain and Abel theme, and I think I even understand how the names Caleb and Aron each are sort of a mixture of the names Cain and Abel, just as each person is a mixture of the two stereotypes. I suppose that could be a spoiler, because we're probably supposed to assume that the two boys will follow a pre-determined path. I'm sure the more I ponder, and the more I research, the closer this book will come to a 5
