Wicked was a compelling read. In the more classic tale of Oz, it's obviously a fantasy world, with little depth and littler background. However, Wicked paints Oz as if it could be a real place with all of the issues, politics, prejudices and history of any other place. Maguire wrote beautiful and exciting descriptions of this woman's life. It was great to read about her descent into paranoia and madness, and sad to watch her continue to isolate herself. I've read this book two times. The first was in 2003. I most recently read it 9/2007, after being introduced to the soundtrack of the musical. For anyone who saw or heard the musical first, be forewarned that the book is quite a bit different! The book is much darker. I happen to like both. My children love the soundtrack of the musical, but I had to disappoint my 6 year-old by telling her that I wouldn't read the book aloud to her.
