3.5 - 4 stars. Overall good, but definitely a 'Twilight' for grown ups. Instead of teens at a high school, they are adult professors at Oxford University. He is a vampire, a she a witch and his obsession. This is just part one (of an unknown number?) in a series where the H/h's story will continue. Many questions remain unanswered. The pacing reminded me a bit of Outlander with its rich details of each character and surrounding, detailed accounts of past events...etc. But for me it was too much

I liked this book at least as much reading it the 2nd time as I did the first go around. I found Diana to be a wonderful character, and it was interesting to see her realize the power she held as a witch. Matthew was also great, and I loved how protective he was toward Diana. The story was fast paced and completely captivating. I enjoyed the way the story took us from Oxford, to France, and then to New York.

So I really liked this one. I put off reading it for a while due to the mixed reviews, but I am glad I finally read it. There were some slow parts but for the most part it didn't take me long to read. The heroine did get on my nerves a bit but her love interest Matthew, was delicious enough that I didn't mind! The next book involves time travel which I think will be quite good!!!

The first half of this book I give a solid one star, the second half gets around a three.
Fundamentally the story is interesting, its just poorly written. This book would have been much better as a mystery instead of a romance. The author just is not good at conveying emotions or depth. All the interesting and well written parts were all the historical aspects. But person to person interaction fell flat.

I would characterize this as a cross between 'DaVinci Code' and 'Twilight'. There's witches and vampires and a mystery to be solved. The plot line kept me engaged and wanting more. The only reasons I knocked off a star (almost two) were for the incessant Twilight-like reminders of who everyone was (witch, vampire or daemon), what their "behaviors" were, and how stoically beautiful vampires are. All that said, I am very much looking forward to more books by Harkness.

I gave up. I just couldn't finish it. Boring. Maybe someday I will try again but in the meantime I will be reading something else.
