The first book was a lot of fun and really indulged in it's trashiness and didn't aspire to achieve grandiose depth beyond its means. I ate it up in one sitting. It was just hate sex and tension like a good old fashioned bodice ripper. However, the sequel made the common mistake of the dark romance genre and attempted to get into Keiran's head and give him more dimension. Which if it were a crime novel and not a romance, it would probably be more consistent and have some Christ.....another one?! The first book was a lot of fun and really indulged in it's trashiness and didn't aspire to achieve grandiose depth beyond its means. I ate it up in one sitting. It was just hate sex and tension like a good old fashioned bodice ripper. However, the sequel made the common mistake of the dark romance genre and attempted to get into Keiran's head and give him more dimension. Which if it were a crime novel and not a romance, it would probably be more consistent and have some real grit, but instead it panders to the cheesiest of romantic notions and attempts to throw some completely out of character sensitivity and reasoning behind the sociopathic cruelty. This only ends in making Keiran seem like he's bipolar and a pain in the ass to read his chapters, which dominate the book. Lake may be a wishy-washy mary sue but I preferred reading from her limited perspective because her vulnerability set up tension and her warring emotions made more sense in the context of her age and experience.

When it was limited to her perspective like in the first book, Keiran's bullying and cruelty were more of an enigma and a mystery. He was unpredictable and moody and it made the reader stay on their toes as much as Lake. That's why it was such a big mistake to flesh him out this much and get in his head, because now he's like the unintentionally hilarious caricature of a bad boy like King from T.M. Frazier. Cue the "Oh-I'm so dark and my heart is dead to the world. I don't feel anything. Damn that girl for making me feel. I WILL OWN HER. Blah blah I love to fucking kill people. Fuckety fuck fuck fuckety fuck fuck. Even in my mind I curse like sailor. But does that really matter to the bleak hole where my heart should be? Oh god lake. Lake. LAAAAAAAAAKE!!!"

Like any good horror film aficionado will tell you, the scariest scenarios are where you don't directly see the monster or supernatural element. When it's beyond your comprehension and your mind is left to wonder, is when you are most chilled. This book took away the only tension the plot had by giving Keiran an elaborate, soap opera backstory. And, Oh god, is it *in Christian Bale batman voice* GRITTY! Not only was Keiran heartlessly sold by his own father for money, apparently he was purchased by a child trafficking ring that trains children to be ruthless hitmen. Yep......and they start them young on their missions because ten year olds make such reliable, cold-blooded methodical killers, right? Also, in case that wasn't dark enough for you, the author tastefully throws in a moment where Keiran is almost forced at gunpoint to perform in child porn. What the fuck?!

But, wait! There's more! Keiran is purchased back by his dead-beat dad and forced by him to kill his own mother without knowing it was his mother. And his dad like a good one-dimensional top hatted villain snickers and relishes telling him the fact. It's like the author had separate brainstorming notes on how to develop why Keiran's so fucked up and decides to throw them all together. Instead of maybe using one or two unbelievably ironic or cruel twists of fate, the author went hog wild and made him the victim of every abuse or neglect humanly possible. Under these sorts of circumstances, this guy shouldn't just be a moody, tatted, controlling jock, he should be in a fucking straight jacket. It just doesn't add up.

And as for the supporting characters, Sheldon and Willow are really fun, strong characters when they aren't pigeonholed into running into their "broken" love interests. Instead of showcasing their sense of humor and friendship, it was a lot of Willow and Dash avoiding eye contact and crossing their arms bitterly or Sheldon sobbing over Keenan's accident. Eh, didn't he cheat on you like every chance he got....? Didn't finish this one. ...more

Just as fantastic as the first book in this series! So many secrets revealed. And, the drama? WOW!! Not one bit disappointing. Of course Kieran still is plagued by his dark past and obsession with Lake. While Lake grows more confident of herself and shows Kieran that she’s no longer afraid of him. The ending was perfect, but the reader knows that this couple has a long way to go towards 100% trust and redemption. I felt a little better about this book then the first one. I was glad to see Lake finally grow a backbone! Good for you girl!

I loved how she didn't let what she knew was love for Kieran blindside her to the fact that he might have killed two people. Although he did keep telling her that he didn't kill them, and he's been upfront with the kind of person he is, so why she didn't believe him the million times he told her that, I will never know.

DNF at 50%. Another series that piqued my interest only to fizzle out. Just too slow-moving, dragging along with nothing happening. I think this might have been better without Kieran’s POV to keep the mystery going. Kieran doing the things he did at age 7 or 8 just was too unbelievable. Also, Lake was a doormat to the utmost extreme - not a lot of strength in her. (Incidentally, why are so many females in these types of books named Lake all of a sudden?)
