Nicely done, Ms. Adrian. This was a very good book. Kade turned out to be a real sweetie under that hardcore, ice-cold warrior facade. He was very tortured by the double whammy of his brother's killer predilection and the fear that he'd be the same. Even though he was living a life of fighting with the Order and partying hard off-duty with human women to get his blood fix, deep down, I think he wanted a woman for his own mate the whole time.

When he met Alexandra, it clicked. And it was the same for Alex. This book turned out to be surprisingly romantic. I didn't expect that. But, I've found that this series is getting more and more along the lines of what I like in a paranormal romance, although it also a gritty action-filled series. I love a good action story with a great romance, so I'm pretty happy!

The setting was very good. Since I love cold weather and it's hot as blazes here in Texas, I enjoyed reading this book set in the frigid arctic Alaskan tundra. I wanted to switch places with Alex (for numerous reasons--except for the psycho blood-thirsty killer parts).

I actually felt kind of sorry for the Ancient. I know, soft touch here. Imagine being stranded on a planet, having been kept prisoner and escaping finally, to be completely out of your element and time? Hunted by your enemies with no one to turn to. Part of me wonders if he will re-emerge. What's the whole deal with Jenna? What did the Ancient do to her?

Could I be crushing harder on Tegan? I love the man. I was very happy that he turned up in this book so I could drool over him. I'm also loving Hunter. That is one bad.... well, you know what I mean. I cannot wait for his book. I'm seeing more aspects of Brock (loyal, protective, good-hearted), and I think his book is going to be very good. I wonder if Chase isn't going to implode any time soon. He's acting pretty weird.

Shades of Midnight was fast-paced but there was a satisfying core of emotional elements. There was the intensity of the love between Alex and Kade that developed quickly but was definitely real and lasting, and the treatment of family in how Kade had to walk away from his for his own sanity, and how Alex had lost hers in very tragic ways. The power of the bond between the Order, and how it became the anchor that Kade needed after he was left adrift when he walked away from his family in Alaska, and his troubled twin brother. Also, seeing some element of human emotion in the Ancient, who had seemed only to be a creature capable of violence prior to this book. I loved Kade's ability to communicate with animals, and how he connected to the wolves. The message about not wantonly slaughtering the wolves because they were suspected to be killing people was timely. Wolves have just now been reintroduced into many natural places in North America. They are a vital part of the ecosystem and are gorgeous, fascinating animals to me. So, I was all on board with protecting the wolves like Alex was. And then there was Alex's lovely wolf-hybrid dog, Luna. What a great companion.

If I had one complaint, I wish that Alex's Breedmate talent was more developed. It seemed like a bit of an afterthought. Otherwise, I was pretty satisfied with this book.

My New Year's Resolution (if you can call it that, more of an intention) was to write something about every book I read this year, even if it is only a few lines.

SHades of Midnight is the 7th book in Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed Series. In this installment, new recruit Kade gets sent home to the Alskan wilderness to investigate a series of grisly attacks.

I enjoyed this installment of the series. The furthering of the overacring storyline, the remote Alaskan setting made a nice change from Boston, some new intersing plot devlopments.

But there were a lot of niggles for me. Niggles I only realised I had after I finished the book. Niggle one. The main characters. I didn't feel as if I knew them at all. The felt extremely disposable. Usually the romatic leads are intergal to thier storyline. Their 'speshul' talents are the ones that are specifically needed to resolve the storyline. This was not the case in this book. You rarely saw Alex's gift and Kade's was wrapped up in this unsatisfying B storyline/charcater conflict point. It could have been anyone at all in the lead roles. Rio and Dylan, Lucan and Gabrielle....

Niggle two. Alaska. Yes, I get that during the winter there is only three hours of sunshine a day, what a playground for the Breed. But what do they do during the summer?? When there is only three hours of Darkness? Do they migrate for the summer? Hibernate? What? No mention was every made and it really started to bug me.

Niggle three. The repetitivness of Breed confict. In every book the male is like 'oh I'm not good enough' and 'I can't get close cause I don't want to pull you into my dangerous, dangerous world..' It's getting a bit old.

That aside, like I said, I did enjoy this book and if you are a fan of the series, it is a strong episode. If you're looking for scorching, all-consuming romance, this isn't the series for you I'm afriad. If you're looking for some nicely paced action with a fresh new take on vampire mythology with a bit of romance thrown in, then you're in luck. This is the series for you.

Excellent read. I liked this Midnight Breed story much better than the previous one [Andreas:]. My complaint about that one was personal, I don't care for plots where the h/h's motivation is [massive:] death of friends/family.

This was another entertaining Midnight Breed story. Reichen and Claire are still my favorite couple of this series. However, Alex and Kade had a wonderful love story as well.

Though, with the end of the book I was left with more questions. Guess I have to wait until the Fall to find out my answers. :)

This series feels like it’s losing some of its former self as it goes on, but I really am enjoying the overall storyline. The main two characters I want to read about, Chase and Hunter. I heard that it may be another one or two books before Chase gets his story and as for Hunter as his partner maybe be the young girl from Veil of Midnight it might be some time before we get his story. Also rather interested about what the Ancient did to Jenna. Clearly the next book Taken by Midnight will be Broc ...more

I was a little leary of this one, not being that familiar with Kade. We didn't learn alot about him in previous books. WELL..I was pleasantly surprised. This was such a good book. Edge of your seat action, some heartbreak, and yes, sex. I loved this book and can't wait for the next. ...more
