Before I begin my review I'd like to thank Bella Forrest for contacting me about A Shade of Vampire and asking me to review it because otherwise I probably would have never picked this book up- and that would have been a real shame. I absolutely loved this book, and my only complaint that it was far too short- I needed more! I am eagerly anticipating the sequel and more Sofia and Derek! Before I begin my review I'd like to thank Bella Forrest for contacting me about A Shade of Vampire and asking me to review it because otherwise I probably would have never picked this book up- and that would have been a real shame. I absolutely loved this book, and my only complaint that it was far too short- I needed more! I am eagerly anticipating the sequel and more Sofia and Derek! Even though Bella tackles a huge cliché in this book - vampires - she adds a twist that makes you look at it in a refreshingly new way. The vamps in this book live in a type of sanctuary called The Shade and they have their own leaders, guards, a witch, and human slaves. Derek is the youngest prince and he has been in this witch-induced sleep/coma for the past four hundred years. Now that he's awakened, his twin sister, Vivienne, decided it was time for him to have his very own harem of human slaves. So she sends out their brother, Lucas, to kidnap a few girls from the human world. This is where Sofia Claremont comes into the picture, her being one of the girls Lucas kidnaps for Derek. But when Derek first sets eyes on her he realizes that she's different, special. And Sofia begins to realize that Derek isn't like the evil vampire who kidnapped her, he shows her compassion and seems to be almost human..... I loved Sofia and Derek's relationship! They don't have an insta-love connection, their relationship actually grows from a kinship that they find in one another. I love how Derek isn't arrogant and how he has doubts about how he can actually lead his people. Sofia..... this girl doesn't take any crap! She lets Derek know in the very beginning that while he can claim to have no control over his vampy instincts, she wasn't going to let him paint himself as the victim. That's the main reason why I love this couple- they're good for each other. They bring out each other's best qualities and I can't wait to see how they tackle their next challenge in book #2! <3

I try not to review young adult books too harshly, because I am not the audience they are designed for. However, that does not mean they should be badly written, have gaping plot holes, and sloppy character development. And unfortunately this book has all three.

I can understand the book being written in a teenager style when it's from the point of view of Sofia, who is a teenager. When you are reading from the perspective of a 500 year old vampire, who has been asleep for the past 400 years, it ...more

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I would have hoped. Perhaps I am burned out on the genre. I am no longer a teenager nor even in my twenties. I look back at my teenaged passion with amusement and sympathy. How much of my life was obsessed with love-interests and boy-craziness. It's true; I was the worst of the bunch.
