Recommend to: People who have read most of the upper tier EU books already.

This book wouldn't be the worst place from someone new to the EU to start. I would recommend the Thrawn trilogy, but this one starts soon after Return of the Jedi, and it is pretty good. The plot felt pretty slow in the first half, but I finally go into it. The new aliens in the book, the Ssi-Ruuk, are interesting on some levels but felt kind of silly. I envisioned them to be kind of like dinosaurs, Stars: 3.5

The plot felt pretty slow in the first half, but I finally go into it. The new aliens in the book, the Ssi-Ruuk, are interesting on some levels but felt kind of silly. I envisioned them to be kind of like dinosaurs, and it was a bit hard to take that seriously, especially when they communicate in some form of whistle language.

Besides the slow plot for the first half, the book suffered a bit by some sloppy writing. There were some scenes, particularly some of the battle scenes, where it was hard to tell what was happening. I didn't appreciate certain aspects of Luke's characterization. (view spoiler)

There were a couple of silly things:

- There is a scene where Luke, Han, and Leia are in a room and talk about how they know the room is bugged. Literally one or two sentences later, they blatantly discuss Vader being Luke's father and really hint that he was also Leia's. This is something they had repeatedly discussed keeping a secret. It was kind of bizarre.

All in all, I enjoyed the book. It definitely isn't in the top tier of the EU, but I'd say it is in the upper-middle tier. ...more

I read this book for the first time when I was in 5th grade, and just reread it. (I'm a Star Wars nerd...don't hate!) I have to say, while I still was engrossed by the story and the fact that it's Star Wars, the writing itself is pretty simplistic and seems to serve the purpose of moving the story forward than it actually delves into any real meat in regards to the characters, settings, and overall plot.
