This was a mixed bag but still seems worthwhile because it was pretty concise. The NJO continues the insane argument that every action that isn't 100% defensive is of the dark side. It continues to be completely idiotic and damaging to Star Wars. Previous books have argued that Luke's actions in the OT were of the dark side because they were aggressive. Rescuing Han and Leia on Bespin? Dark Side. Destroying the second death star? Dark side. They would probably think Stars: 3

It continues to be completely idiotic and damaging to Star Wars. Previous books have argued that Luke's actions in the OT were of the dark side because they were aggressive. Rescuing Han and Leia on Bespin? Dark Side. Destroying the second death star? Dark side. They would probably think destroying the first Death Star was evil as well because they could have run away instead. It's just a nonsensical argument that they coincidentally ignore anytime they feel like. Here's how stupid their argument is. According to their logic, if a home invader broke into your house while you were in your bedroom and starting murdering your children in the living room, it would be an evil act of aggression to go to the living room and fight back. The ending of the book is what really redeems the book in my eyes mainly because they finally made a good character decision. (view spoiler)

The plot of the previous book was very good partly because we got to focus mostly on one character and one setting. The plot of this book makes you wonder why this is a duology besides being written by the same author. There is only a relatively small portion of this plot that feels connected to book one.

We also got a detailed perspective from a Vong person in the first book; something that has been mostly omitted in this series so far. The perspective of Nen Yim, a female Shaper, is continued excellently in this book.
