Death has always been one of those subjects you have to handle very carefully because it's easy to have death in the background of a story because then you don't need to write too much about it, you can just throw in a couple of crying characters and be done with it. It's different when death is the main subject within the book because then you have to go much more in depth.

Harrington handles the subject of death really well within this book, she shows that everyone reacts differently which we Death has always been one of those subjects you have to handle very carefully because it's easy to have death in the background of a story because then you don't need to write too much about it, you can just throw in a couple of crying characters and be done with it. It's different when death is the main subject within the book because then you have to go much more in depth.

Harrington handles the subject of death really well within this book, she shows that everyone reacts differently which we wouldn't have gotten in a book where death was only in the background. Each character has there own way of mourning and that is so very true to real life. As a person who has lost a loved one I have seen how much losing someone can tear a family apart and break the most strongest of people down into nothing. I also know of people, families who have battled similar cases of what Harper and her family battled in this book.

Harper wishes she could be like everyone else and show her emotions the way other people do but she does just in her own way. She runs off to California, smokes, drinks and has fun. She is broken inside but the people around her can only see what is on the outside In some ways I am just like Harper as I am also someone who doesn't show my emotions no matter how much I try.

Despite all this I couldn't connect with Harper, I understood her and why she did the things that she did but I just couldn't connect with her. I don't think I cared enough about her because when I care about characters and bad stuff happens to them I do tend to get emotional for them. This didn't happen with Harper however, I just felt sorry for her.

I loved the musical element to the book and it is a big element. I feel slightly ashamed to admit that I know/ like most of the songs that Jake played though out the book. That is a result of living with my mum I guess and her endless array of music. The playlists at the end of the book were great also, I could so go away and listen to the music centred around the book and it's funny cos I can guarantee all the music off those playlists would be on my mum's iPod.

Even know I couldn't connect with Harper I still enjoyed the book and enjoyed reading her journey to self discovery. I did feel some chapters weren't necessary within the book and didn't really tell us anything but still it was a nice read despite the depressing subject. This book is in no way depressing however, except maybe for me towards the end but that for me is due to personal reasons. It makes me want my own road trip with those songs just spilling out of the car stereo

I will definitely check out other books by Hannah Harrington because I enjoyed her writing style and now that she has handled the subject of death smoothly I'm interested to know what other subjects she can handle also.
